Howard Phillips Lovecraft is a man many consider to be the forefather of modern horror. LOVECRAFT: FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN is a chronicle of this influential author’s life, work, and mind. Lovecraft’s most enduring creation was the Cthulhu mythos. This series of loosely connected stories tells of the Old Ones, a race of god-like beings that lurk in the recesses of existence. There they wait for the tentacled priest Cthulhu to rise and regain dominion over the world.

These weird tales have intrigued writers such as Stephen King, Robert Bloch and Neil Gaiman. Their influence can be seen in film (Re-animator, Hellboy, and Alien), games (The Call of Cthulhu role playing enterprise), music (Metallica, Iron Maiden) and pop culture in general.

With the recent publication of his collected works by The Library Of America, Lovecraft has joined Edgar Allan Poe and Ambrose Bierce as part of the nation’s literary heritage.

But what led an Old World, xenophobic gentleman to create one of literature’s most far-reaching mythologies? What attracts even the minds of the 21st century to these stories of unspeakable abominations and cosmic gods?

LOVECRAFT examines these questions through conversations with today’s luminaries in the field of dark fiction including:

  • Guillermo Del Toro (director - Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy)
  • John Carpenter (director - Halloween, The Thing)
  • Neil Gaiman (author - Stardust, American Gods)
  • Peter Straub (author - Ghost Story, Lost Boy Lost Girl)
  • Stuart Gordon (director - Edmond, Re-Animator)
  • Ramsey Campbell (author - The Inhabitant of the Lake, The Darkest Part of the Woods)
  • S.T. Joshi (author/biographer - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life)
  • Caitlin R. Kiernan (author - Daughter Of Hounds, Silk)
  • Andrew Migliore (founder - H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)
  • Robert M. Price (author / editor - Crypt of Cthulhu, The Da Vinci Fraud)
