Darren discovered Lovecraft in the early 1990s when he started playing The Call of Cthulhu. He studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before working as an actor on stage and screen. One of his first jobs was as actor and fight choreographer in Christopher Nolan’s debut film, ‘Following’. Between acting jobs he worked as a prop maker and made The Book of the Dead featured in Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy films. In 2004 he wrote his first play ‘Hamburg,’ about the RAF raids in World War II, for the London Terror Season. He has written two more plays for the Terror Season, ‘Sweetmeat’, about the Marquis de Sade, and ‘Horror Show’ about the reality of internet snuff movies. His continuing fascination with Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos led to the creation of Project 7 with Matt Button and Andy Green. He wrote their first short film, ‘Mr Gibson’ which was selected for the Minghella Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award at Cinefringe, the Edinburgh Fringe Film Festival.. Though currently based in Beijing with his wife and two daughters, he is also a visiting tutor in Shakespeare Studies at Oxford University.
