Feature Film: The Yellow Wallpaper (New England Premiere)
Join us for the New England premiere of The Yellow Wallpaper, based on the story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Lovecraft himself said this about the story: "Charlotte Perkins Gilman, in The Yellow Wall Paper, rises to a classic level in subtly delineating the madness which crawls over a woman dwelling in the hideously papered room where a madwoman was once confined." It is also extraordinarily likely that the mouldering and decaying Gilman House hotel in Shadow Over Innsmouth is named after Charlotte Perkins Gilman (and not a pun on Gill Man, though maybe it served both ways)... and if you consider the nauseating yellow wallpaper of the author's story, it's not hard to imagine the connection. After all, SOI is a story about someone descending and being driven to madness when discovering the origins of their own blood ties to the decadent Marsh clan.
The Yellow Wallpaper
Jane, a young mother and writer, is prescribed a rest treatment by her physician husband John who locks her in a room for the summer. She becomes obsessed with the peculiar wallpaper and in her isolation, she secretly writes about a woman trapped in the wallpaper—that she alone can free.
