By entering our events, all attendees accept our General Policies and agree to abide by our Code of Conduct. Attendees must respect common sense rules for public behavior, personal interaction, common courtesy, and respect for private property. Harassing or offensive behavior will not be tolerated. We reserve the right to revoke, without refund, the membership and badge of any attendee not in compliance with this policy.

Lovecraft and his racism

As the organizers of the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Portland Horror Film Festival, we support the Black Lives Matter movement, viewing it not as a political issue but a human rights issue. The slogan itself is not trademarked by any organization and is used by anyone who protests police brutality and racially motivated violence, a very real and ongoing issue in our country today.

H. P. Lovecraft was a pulp author during the 1920s and 1930s, and is one of the most influential horror writers of the modern era. Without him, we'd likely not have the Stephen Kings or Clive Barkers that we recognize today. Like many American historical figures, he is problematic due to his racist personal beliefs, which manifest primarily in his private letters, but also in some of his works. We believe in celebrating his substantial influence on art, music, film, and literature, while acknowledging but firmly rejecting his racist views.
