Moviemaker and Lovecraft fan Guillermo del Toro confirmed earlier today that he would be the final judge for the winner of the short film contest for the 2011 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival®, held at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, California, September 16 & 17.
A lengthy interview with Guillermo is in the February 7 issue of the New Yorker magazine.
Yesterday, Southern California Festival Director Aaron Vanek dined with the fine folks of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society at Mel's Drive-In in Hollywood to discuss plans for this year's HPLFF.
Yes, their new film, the talkie feature Whisperer in Darkness will play at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro in September.
This screening will be very special; since San Pedro is in their backyard, they can bring the shop with them: expect a large exhibit of props and goodies from the movie to be on display both inside and outside the theater.
1931 marks the year that both the Warner Grand Theater opened and Lovecraft's story was published in Weird Tales magazine, so we plan on celebrating both landmarks' birthdays in style.
Please join us this September 16 & 17 in San Pedro, California, for what is shaping up to be a spectacular Lovecraft Film Festival.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel, a mere three blocks from the Warner, is offering a special discount on their rooms for the weekend. Enter group code HPL when booking for the special rates.
Stay tuned for more updates!
We will be forming a new steering committee and executive committee for the HPLFF Portland festival in early 2011.
Director Stuart Gordon (Re-animator, Feed, Stuck) and director David Prior (AM 1200) will be on the committee with others to be named.
The current plan is to have the Portland festival in early May of 2012 which pushes out the Portland festival by 6 months from where it has traditionally been held. The plan is also to have the executive committee and positions flushed out by March of 2011.
I am stepping down as festival director as announced at this year's Portland festival but will remain as an executive director and founder for the organization run by Lurker Films.
Would love to hear from you with any feedback. There are a lot of people who want to get involved which is great.
Until then, have a very Dreary Cthulhumas and hopefully a New Year!
cheers
The festival will be held Friday Sept. 16 (7-midnight), and Saturday Sept. 17 (4pm-midnight). There will be 13 hours of programming, vendors, guests and more.
Easy parking, pay for two hours on Saturday, then it's free.
The festival hotel will be the Crowne Plaza.
Look for more info from festival director Aaron Vanek next year!
Happy Holidays
Thanks to all the filmmakers and screenwriters and authors for another great year.

We apologize to all those of you have been trying to email us here at the festival. We've had D.O.S. attacks on several of our email boxes thanks to all those spammers out there. Still getting 1000's of emails. We are blocking IPs and it should settle down. So again sorry if you sent anything in the last couple of weeks and if we haven't responded. cheers
