Since Backfire, they have only put out one album—a critical and financial failure. After another lackluster tour, guitarist and songwriter, Eric Patrick, is ready to throw in the towel to the dismay of his friend and bandmate, Olivia Greenwood.
After a chance encounter with rock-legend and life-long idol, Emerson Gilmour, Eric is willing to take one more chance at success, the way Emerson Gilmour did it back in the 70s—out in the Canadian mountains with a guitar and a bag of psychedelic drugs.
Prepared for a five-day canoe trip down a remote river, Eric, Olivia, the band’s singer and bass player, Mitchell Hoffman, and band groupie, April, set out into the wild.
The hopeful canoe trip hits its first bump when the band members start hearing noises around their nightly stops. As the drug works its way through their bodies, the isolated musicians realize the strange sounds are not hallucinations, but something very real.

“Phototaxis” draws parallels between Mothman, a prophetic and demonized creature in West Virginia lore, and Narcotics Anonymous, the main treatment program in West Virginia’s addiction epidemic. Rooted in nonfiction, this film contemplates synchronicity and the role of belief systems in perception; the tendency to assign supernatural meaning to tragedy and the unknowable; anonymous and apocryphal oral histories; and the moth to the flame. To visualize these narratives, natural materials and pastel-on-paper palimpsest animation are woven together using a multiplane and analog overhead projection.
