In rural 17th-century England, a group of men gather to carry a coffin on the long walk to the local graveyard for burial. Much ancient folklore and superstition surround the pathway to the church, and several of the party are afraid to walk it after dark. Squire Marlow, the grieving father of the dead man, promises to double their wages if they agree to make the mysterious journey full of unexpected revelations.

A young, blind woman visits her father, but when she gets to his home, everything is off. He has become obsessed with something horrible, seen through his telescope, which he names 'Ihruqax'. Unable to see the thing he's talking about, the woman can only latch on to the clear signs of mental degradation in him, and tries to get him the help he needs. This task is difficult and only reveals deeper, more horrifying delusions in the father.  When she finally persuades him to go to the doctor, there are much bigger problems at stake.
